HENRI GUÉRARD ( Paris, 1846 – 1897 ) Fan with laburnum flowers, circa1890 Watercolor on silk 57 x 28 cm, silk sheet 58,5 x 32 cm Signed lower right : H. Guérard « Guérard is a modernist, impressionist, manétist (similar to Manet), landscape artist, sailor, japanist, fantasist, alchemist, essayist, an unrelenting imagination with a bouquet of fireworks bursting into a thousand whims in the head »: this is how Henri Béraldi, a 19th century art collector and writer, describes Henri Guérard, painter and printmaker. In 1889, Guérard became vice-president of the Société des Peintres-graveurs, founded with Félix Bracquemond and he strove to make known the artistic possibilities of print as an expression in its own right, in the same way as painting or drawing.
