Exhibition Paul Delvaux, The Institut gallery
The Institut gallery presents from January 19, 2023 a selection of lithographs and etchings by Paul Delvaux (1897-1994).
Paul Delvaux started engraving late, in 1960, when he was 63 years old. He was at the time, appointed professor of monumental painting at the l’École nationale supérieure des arts visuels – Brussels (La Cambre). He created his first etching, Bust of a Woman, while visiting its engraving workshops with his students.
At the end of 1965, he executed his first lithographs. They are printed the following year at Fernand Mourlot’s, the famous Parisian workshop
His engraved work includes a hundred works that he produced until 1975. A recurring theme in Delvaux’s engravings is woman, even more ubiquitous than in his paintings. His compositions are strongly infused with art history, from Antiquity to Giorgio de Chirico, among many other references, by the School of Fontainebleau.
